Overview

Plasma membrane phospholipids are a class of amphipathic molecules consisting of hydrophilic phosphate headgroups and hydrophobic fatty acid tails. They spontaneously form bilayer structures in aqueous environments, providing the essential barrier between the cell interior and exterior. The major types include phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylinositol, and sphingomyelin. These molecules control membrane fluidity, selective permeability, and serve as platforms for cell signaling by anchoring proteins and organizing membrane domains. Changes in their composition or metabolism can impact a variety of cellular processes and are associated with disease states, but they do not function as druggable targets in the manner of receptors, transporters, or enzymes.
