Plasma oncotic pressure maintenance via macromolecule retention

Overview

Plasma oncotic pressure is the component of osmotic pressure in blood plasma that is exerted by plasma proteins, especially albumin, which are too large to cross the capillary wall[1][2][3][4]. This pressure is a key determinant for retaining water within the vasculature and opposing the leakage (filtration) of water into the interstitial (tissue) compartment. Failure of this mechanism, as seen in hypoalbuminemia or increased capillary permeability, leads to clinical conditions such as edema or ascites. The process is not attributed to a single target but rather the collective action of several plasma proteins, with albumin being the most significant contributor.
