Plasminogen Activator Enzyme (PA)

Target
PA
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Serine Protease
01

Overview

Plasminogen activators are serine protease enzymes that convert plasminogen to plasmin, initiating fibrinolysis and regulating blood clot dissolution. Key types include tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) and urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA). These enzymes play crucial roles in hemostasis, tissue remodeling, cell migration, and synaptic plasticity. Recombinant tPA is used therapeutically for thrombolysis, but excessive or insufficient activity can lead to bleeding complications or increased thrombosis risk, respectively.
