Overview

Plasminogen mRNA is the transcript produced from the PLG gene that encodes the precursor protein plasminogen, mainly synthesized in the liver and found in plasma. Plasminogen is proteolytically activated to plasmin, a serine protease responsible for fibrin degradation (fibrinolysis) and essential for wound healing, cell migration, inflammation, and resolution of blood clots. Expression of plasminogen mRNA has been detected in various tissues, highlighting its broad biological relevance. Clinical interventions target the protein or its activators/inhibitors, not the mRNA transcript itself.
