Plasminogen pseudogene (None standard; abbreviated as "PLG pseudogene" in some gene databases)

Target

Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Processed pseudogene

Overview

The plasminogen pseudogene (ENSG00000274903) is a genomic DNA segment similar in sequence to the functional plasminogen gene but does not encode a functional plasminogen protein. Pseudogenes are typically nonfunctional, arising via duplication or retrotransposition events, and lack the regulatory or coding capacity of the parent gene. The plasminogen gene, which encodes a key proenzyme in the fibrinolytic system, has functional versions elsewhere in the genome, but pseudogenes such as ENSG00000274903 are generally unable to produce active protein products and are not considered valid therapeutic targets.

Mechanism of action

None applicable. Mechanisms of action are only relevant to functional protein targets

03

Biological functions

None established. Most pseudogenes do not have well-defined biological functions, though some can influence gene regulation in rare cases; there is no evidence for this specific pseudogene
04

Disease associations

None known for this specific plasminogen pseudogene. Pseudogenes generally do not have direct roles in disease, but some pseudogenes in the genome have been linked to cancer or regulation of disease-associated genes
