It functions as a Na+ efflux pump, maintaining low cytosolic Na+ concentrations critical for parasite viability and nutrient uptake. PfATP4 is a validated antimalarial drug target, with multiple classes of compounds inhibiting its function. Resistance to these drugs can arise from mutations in pfatp4, often with associated fitness costs.
