Overview

PfEMP1 is a highly variable surface antigen expressed on infected erythrocytes. It mediates cytoadherence to endothelial cells, leading to sequestration of infected cells in various organs. This process contributes to severe malaria pathologies. PfEMP1 is a major target of acquired immunity and a key virulence factor. Its sequence diversity allows for antigenic variation and immune evasion. Targeting PfEMP1 is a promising strategy for preventing severe malaria.
