Plasmodium falciparum Haem Detoxification Pathway

Molecular classification
Metabolic pathway
01

Overview

The Plasmodium falciparum haem detoxification pathway is a critical biological process that enables the malaria parasite to survive within human red blood cells. During its intraerythrocytic stage, the parasite digests host hemoglobin in an acidic digestive vacuole (DV), releasing large amounts of free haem (ferriprotoporphyrin IX, Fe(III)PPIX). Free haem is highly toxic due to its ability to generate reactive oxygen species and disrupt cellular membranes. To avoid toxicity, *P. falciparum* rapidly converts free haem into an inert crystalline pigment called hemozoin. Several antimalarial drugs act by disrupting this pathway: Chloroquine and Artemisinin-based drugs.
