Heme metabolism in Plasmodium falciparum is essential for its survival during blood-stage infection. The parasite scavenges heme from host hemoglobin and converts toxic free heme into inert hemozoin crystals within its food vacuole. While the parasite possesses a de novo heme biosynthesis pathway, it is not essential during intraerythrocytic development. Targeting heme detoxification by blocking hemozoin formation is a validated antimalarial strategy.
