Liver stage antigen 3 (LSA-3) is a highly conserved protein expressed by Plasmodium falciparum during the pre-erythrocytic (liver) stage of its lifecycle. It is a promising candidate for malaria vaccine development due to its strong immunogenicity and association with protective immune responses. It elicits strong T-cell and B-cell responses and is found on the surface of sporozoites and localized within the parasitophorous vacuole membrane (PVM) inside infected hepatocytes. Recombinant LSA‑3 has shown utility for early serodiagnosis of P. falciparum infection.
LSA-3 is targeted by antibodies and T-cells, leading to parasite clearance and protection from infection.
