Plasmodium falciparum merozoite surface protein 3 (MSP3) is a soluble, abundantly expressed protein found on the surface of the merozoite stage of the malaria parasite P. falciparum. It is a key target for immune responses and has been extensively studied as a candidate antigen for blood-stage malaria vaccines. MSP3 is present on the merozoite surface as part of a multi-protein complex that includes MSP1, MSP6, and MSP7. Antibodies against its N-terminal region are commonly found in individuals exposed to malaria-endemic regions and can mediate monocyte-dependent killing of parasites. Immunization with recombinant forms protects non-human primates from infection, and a vaccine based on an N-terminal fragment is in human trials.
