Plasmodium falciparum pre-erythrocytic stage antigens are proteins expressed by the malaria parasite during its early development in the human host, specifically during the sporozoite and liver (hepatic) stages before it infects red blood cells. These antigens are key targets for vaccine development because immune responses against them can prevent infection from progressing to symptomatic malaria. Notable examples include CSP, LSA1, LSA3, LSAP1/LSAP2, ETRAMP5, and UIS3. Vaccines targeting these antigens aim to induce humoral and cellular immunity to neutralize sporozoites or eliminate infected hepatocytes.
