Plasmodium falciparum purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PfPNP) is a crucial enzyme in the purine salvage pathway of the malaria parasite P. falciparum. The parasite relies on salvaging purines from its host, making PfPNP essential for survival. It catalyzes the reversible phosphorolysis of purine nucleosides, converting them into bases and ribose 1-phosphate. As an essential enzyme absent from host red blood cells, PfPNP is an attractive antimalarial drug target.
