Target intelligence / Profile preview
The Plasmodium falciparum sporozoite is the motile, infectious form of the malaria parasite transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito. It represents the first stage of infection in humans and is a critical target for malaria intervention strategies. After transmission via mosquito bite, sporozoites travel through the bloodstream to infect liver cells (hepatocytes), where they mature and multiply before initiating blood-stage infection. Key surface proteins like Circumsporozoite Protein (CSP) and Thrombospondin-related Anonymous Protein (TRAP) are crucial for infectivity and are vaccine targets.
