The Plasmodium falciparum sporozoite represents the infective stage of the parasite that initiates the liver stage of malaria. Upon entering the human host via mosquito bite, sporozoites invade hepatocytes, where they undergo asexual replication, forming schizonts and eventually releasing merozoites into the bloodstream. This liver stage is clinically silent but crucial for establishing the symptomatic blood-stage infection. As such, it is considered a critical target for antimalarial drug and vaccine development.
