The liver stage of Plasmodium species is a critical, early phase in the malaria parasite's lifecycle that occurs after transmission from an infected mosquito to a vertebrate host. During this stage, sporozoites enter the bloodstream and rapidly invade hepatocytes, where they undergo significant growth and replication before initiating symptomatic blood-stage infection. Some species also form dormant hypnozoite stages that can cause relapses. Targeting this stage is a key strategy for malaria prevention and radical cure.
