Plasmodium species

Molecular classification
Parasite, Apicomplexa, Eukaryotic parasite
01

Overview

Plasmodium is a genus of unicellular eukaryotic parasites responsible for causing malaria. These obligate intracellular parasites have a complex life cycle involving both vertebrate hosts (humans, other mammals, birds, reptiles) and mosquito vectors (Anopheles spp.). Key pathogenic mechanisms include red blood cell invasion and replication, antigenic variation to evade host immunity, and disruption of host cell function. Several species infect humans, with P. falciparum being the most deadly. The apicoplast, a nonphotosynthetic plastid, is an essential organelle and an important drug target.
