Molecular classification
Cell fragment
01

Overview

Platelets, also known as thrombocytes, are small, colorless cell fragments found in blood. They are not true cells but rather fragments derived from large bone marrow cells called megakaryocytes. Their primary function is to stop or prevent bleeding by forming clots at sites of blood vessel injury.

Mechanism of action

Various, depending on the drug. Examples include inhibition of platelet aggregation via inhibition of cyclooxygenase (aspirin) or P2Y12 receptor (clopidogrel).
