Platelet activating factor synthase refers to the group of enzymes responsible for the biosynthesis of platelet-activating factor (PAF), a potent phospholipid mediator involved in inflammation, thrombosis, and various physiological and pathological processes. PAF is synthesized by multiple cell types, including platelets, endothelial cells, neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages, and basophils. There are two main pathways for PAF synthesis: Remodeling Pathway and De Novo Pathway. Dysregulation or excessive production/activity of platelet activating factor synthase has been implicated in numerous pathological states. Inhibitors targeting either biosynthetic enzymes or the receptor have been explored therapeutically.
