Platelet activating factor synthetase refers to the family of enzymes responsible for the biosynthesis of platelet-activating factor (PAF), a potent lipid mediator involved in inflammation, immune responses, and various physiological processes. The main enzymatic activity associated with this process is acetyl-CoA:lyso-PAF acetyltransferase (also known as LPCAT2 or LPLAT9), which transfers an acetyl group from acetyl-CoA to 1-O-alkyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphocholine (lyso-PAF) at the sn-2 position. Dysregulation or overproduction can contribute to chronic inflammatory diseases including cardiovascular disease and asthma due to excessive pro-inflammatory signaling.
