Blood platelet function refers to the complex physiological processes of platelet activation, adhesion, and aggregation that are essential for maintaining hemostasis and preventing excessive blood loss after vascular injury (StatPearls, 2023). While often discussed as a therapeutic endpoint, it is not a single molecular target but rather a multi-step pathway involving various specific targets such as the P2Y12 receptor, Cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1), and Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa (NIH/NCBI, 2022). Upon blood vessel damage, platelets adhere to subendothelial proteins, undergo shape changes, and release signaling molecules like ADP and Thromboxane A2 that recruit and activate additional platelets (Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, 2019). Pathological over-activation of this function leads to arterial thrombosis, the primary cause of myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke. Antiplatelet drugs are designed to inhibit specific nodes within this functional network to reduce cardiovascular risk, although this necessitates a careful balance to avoid life-threatening bleeding complications (AHA/ACC Guidelines, 2021). Monitoring platelet function is critical in clinical settings to assess drug efficacy and manage patients undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions (PubMed, 2020).
