Overview

Platelet aggregation and hemostasis represent the complex physiological processes responsible for maintaining vascular integrity and preventing excessive blood loss following injury (StatPearls, NBK545263). Hemostasis involves a coordinated sequence of vascular constriction, platelet adhesion and aggregation to form a primary plug, and the activation of the coagulation cascade to produce a stable fibrin mesh (NIH, NBK470279). While essential for survival, pathological activation of these pathways can lead to arterial or venous thrombosis, resulting in life-threatening conditions such as myocardial infarction or ischemic stroke (PubMed, PMID: 30134134). Pharmacological intervention typically involves antiplatelet agents that target specific receptors like P2Y12 or enzymes like COX-1, and anticoagulants that inhibit clotting factors such as Thrombin or Factor Xa (PubChem). Balancing the prevention of thrombosis with the inherent risk of bleeding remains the primary therapeutic challenge in managing these processes.
