Overview
Platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) is a homodimeric growth factor composed of two B subunits. It plays a critical role in regulating cell growth, proliferation, chemotaxis, and angiogenesis. Primarily secreted by platelets, PDGF-BB binds to and activates PDGFRα and PDGFRβ receptor tyrosine kinases, initiating signaling pathways that are crucial for wound healing, tissue regeneration, and bone formation. However, it is also implicated in the pathology of cancer and fibrotic diseases due to its potent mitogenic and angiogenic properties. Recombinant human PDGF-BB is used clinically to enhance chronic ulcer healing.
