Overview
PECAM-1/CD31 is a pivotal regulator at the interface between blood components and vessel walls with diverse roles spanning from maintaining vascular homeostasis to modulating immune responses. It is expressed on endothelial cells, platelets, and leukocytes and is involved in adhesion, signaling, vascular biology, leukocyte trafficking, platelet function, and angiogenesis. Its ITIM motifs allow it to function as an inhibitory receptor. It is being explored as a therapeutic target for diseases involving abnormal inflammation or thrombosis and for targeted drug delivery.
