Overview

Platelet function encompasses the processes by which platelets (thrombocytes) contribute to hemostasis, wound healing, and immunity. Platelets prevent and stop bleeding by adhering to damaged vessel walls, becoming activated, and aggregating to form a platelet plug. They also release factors that promote tissue repair and interact with immune cells. Dysfunctional platelet activity can lead to bleeding disorders or thrombosis. Many antithrombotic drugs target specific platelet functions.
