Platelet-leukocyte adhesion refers to the process by which platelets and leukocytes interact and bind to each other, particularly during vascular injury or inflammation. This interaction is a key event in both hemostasis and the immune response, as it facilitates leukocyte recruitment to sites of tissue damage or infection. Key molecules involved include P-selectin on platelets and PSGL-1 on leukocytes, as well as GPIb and CD11b/CD18. Platelet activation is required for aggregate formation. Platelet-leukocyte aggregates serve as biomarkers for tissue injury and can contribute to both host defense and vascular leakage/inflammation. Blocking P-selectin or PSGL-1 is a potential therapeutic strategy.
