Overview

Platelet membrane integrity" refers to the structural and functional wholeness of the platelet plasma membrane, which is crucial for platelet viability, maintaining cellular compartmentalization, and supporting hemostatic functions such as coagulation and thrombus formation. Loss of membrane integrity results in leakage of cytosolic material, irreversible damage, and impaired platelet function. Membrane integrity is particularly relevant in transfusion medicine, where platelets are stored and are vulnerable to cold and freeze-induced injury; cryoprotective agents like DMSO can experimentally reduce membrane damage. It is a critical measure for ensuring the therapeutic efficacy and safety of platelet transfusions, but is not a druggable target in the conventional sense[5].
