Overview

Platelet-rich fibrin matrix (PRFM), also known as plasma-rich fibrin matrix, is a second-generation autologous platelet concentrate used extensively in regenerative medicine, dentistry, and aesthetic procedures [1, 5]. Unlike first-generation products like Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), PRFM is prepared without anticoagulants, allowing for the formation of a dense, three-dimensional fibrin scaffold that naturally traps platelets and leukocytes [2, 10]. This unique architecture facilitates the slow and sustained release of essential growth factors, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which are critical for tissue repair and angiogenesis [4, 6]. In clinical practice, PRFM serves as a biological scaffold that supports cell migration, proliferation, and differentiation, making it effective for treating chronic wounds, bone defects, and skin aging [12, 14]. Because it is derived entirely from the patient's own blood, it offers high biocompatibility and a low risk of adverse reactions [1, 5]. Although it is a therapeutic agent rather than a molecular drug target, its efficacy is often evaluated through biomarkers like platelet and fibrinogen concentrations [11, 12]. Common applications include facial rejuvenation, treatment of periorbital wrinkles, and acceleration of healing in musculoskeletal injuries [10, 12].
