Platinum-based compounds are a class of chemotherapeutic agents containing platinum as a central atom, widely used in the treatment of several solid tumors including ovarian, testicular, lung, colorectal, and several other cancers. These agents (such as cisplatin, carboplatin, and oxaliplatin) form covalent cross-links with DNA within cancer cells, leading to DNA damage, cell cycle arrest, and ultimately cell death via apoptosis or necrosis. Although highly effective and essential in oncology, their use is limited by significant side effects, potential for acquired resistance, lack of tumor selectivity, and systemic toxicity.
