Overview

PMPCAP1 ("PMPCA pseudogene 1") is a human genomic pseudogene derived from the PMPCA (peptidase, mitochondrial processing subunit alpha) gene[7][5]. Unlike the canonical PMPCA protein, which serves key mitochondrial functions in processing precursor proteins, PMPCAP1 does not encode a functional protein and is considered a noncoding or defective gene segment. Pseudogenes may sometimes have regulatory impacts in the genome, such as acting as miRNA decoys, but for PMPCAP1, there is no evidence of protein expression, clinical relevance, or biological function, nor is it considered a therapeutic target. The gene is categorized simply as a pseudogene in gene databases, with no annotated molecular or disease roles[7][5][6].
