PMS1 homolog 2, mismatch repair system component pseudogene 13 (PMS2P13)

Overview

PMS2P13 is one of several pseudogenes on chromosome 7 that are highly homologous to the functional PMS2 gene, which encodes an essential protein for DNA mismatch repair. Unlike functional genes, pseudogenes like PMS2P13 do not code for a functional protein and have no known biological function. Importantly, their sequence similarity to PMS2 can interfere with genetic testing and mutation analysis for PMS2, occasionally leading to false positive results or misinterpretation in clinical genetic diagnostics. Pseudogenes such as PMS2P13 are not considered drug targets or involved directly in disease processes, although they may complicate evaluation of PMS2 in hereditary cancer syndromes due to sequence overlap[2][4][6]. This name refers to a pseudogene, not a functional protein or therapeutic target. Its sequence similarity to PMS2 means it can be mistaken for the functional gene in genetic tests, but it is not itself involved in mismatch repair, disease, or drug action[2][4][6].
