Overview

Pneumococcal capsular polysaccharide serotype 14 is a complex carbohydrate polymer that serves as a primary virulence factor for the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae. It consists of a repeating tetrasaccharide unit composed of D-glucose, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, and D-galactose, which forms a protective capsule around the bacterial cell. This capsule provides a physical and chemical barrier that shields the pathogen from host immune defenses, specifically by inhibiting opsonophagocytosis and complement-mediated killing. Serotype 14 is one of the most prevalent and invasive pneumococcal serotypes globally, frequently associated with severe infections such as pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia in both pediatric and adult populations. Because of its high pathogenicity, it is a critical antigenic target in all currently licensed pneumococcal vaccines, including conjugate (PCV) and polysaccharide (PPSV) formulations. These vaccines work by inducing the production of serotype-specific antibodies that facilitate the recognition and clearance of the bacteria by the host's immune system.
