Overview

PNMA family member 1 (PNMA1) is a protein predominantly expressed in neurons and testis, and also found in association with paraneoplastic neurological syndromes affecting the nervous system. The PNMA protein family is characterized by conserved sequence homology to retrotransposon gag proteins and a role in cell signaling and apoptosis, especially within the brain. PNMA1 is immunogenic in cancer patients exhibiting paraneoplastic syndromes, and antibodies against PNMA1 can be used for diagnostic purposes. While its broader physiological function remains incompletely understood, altered or aberrant expression of PNMA1 and related family proteins is implicated in cancer biology and various rare genetic disorders.
