Podocyte stability refers to the ability of podocytes—specialized epithelial cells in the kidney glomerulus—to maintain their structural and functional integrity, which is essential for proper glomerular filtration and overall renal function. Podocytes form a crucial component of the glomerular filtration barrier by wrapping around capillaries in Bowman's capsule, creating interdigitating foot processes connected by slit diaphragms. The maintenance of these structures is central to podocyte stability. It involves an integrated network involving structural proteins (nephrin), scaffolding/adaptor molecules (CD2AP), adhesion complexes (integrins), contractile elements (actomyosin complex), and regulatory pathways governing their assembly/disassembly. Disruption at any point can compromise overall cell function leading directly to clinical manifestations seen in various kidney diseases.
