The Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) Pol polyprotein is a large precursor protein encoded by the *pol* gene of HIV-1. It contains the viral enzymes protease (PR), reverse transcriptase (RT), and integrase (IN), which are essential for viral replication. The Pol polyprotein is produced as part of a longer Gag-Pol polyprotein through ribosomal frameshifting. After translation, the Gag-Pol polyprotein is cleaved by the viral protease into its functional components. These enzymes are major targets for antiretroviral drugs.
