Poliovirus Antigen (Inactivated) (IPV Antigen)

Target
IPV Antigen
Molecular classification
Viral protein, Viral antigen
01

Overview

The inactivated poliovirus antigen is the immunogenic component of the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV). It comprises whole poliovirus particles, typically inactivated by formaldehyde, retaining their ability to induce a protective immune response. The antigen is derived from one or more of the three poliovirus serotypes (types 1, 2, and 3). The inactivation process can modify or destroy certain epitopes, especially those at site 1 on types 2 and 3, leading to reduced binding by some monoclonal antibodies. IPV induces a strong humoral immune response characterized by production of neutralizing antibodies. Immunogenicity can vary depending on whether wild-type or attenuated Sabin strains are used.
