Poliovirus antigens refer to the structural proteins (VP1, VP2, VP3, VP4) present on the surface of the three poliovirus serotypes (PV-1, PV-2, and PV-3). These antigens are critical for immune recognition and are the targets of neutralizing antibodies induced by polio vaccines. Key antigenic sites (Site I, Site II, Site III) on the capsid proteins vary slightly between serotypes, influencing immune responses and cross-protection. Vaccines utilize either inactivated whole-virus (IPV) or live attenuated strains (OPV) to stimulate immunity against these antigens.
Vaccines stimulate the production of neutralizing antibodies against the poliovirus capsid proteins, preventing viral entry and infection.
