Poliovirus capsid protein VP1 is one of the four structural proteins (VP1, VP2, VP3, and VP4) that make up the icosahedral shell of the poliovirus virion. Each virion contains 60 copies of each capsid protein. VP1 interacts directly with CD155 (also known as PVR or poliovirus receptor), mediating attachment to host epithelial cells. Upon binding to CD155, poliovirus undergoes a conformational change to form a cell entry intermediate. Antibodies against VP1 can neutralize infectivity.
