The capsid proteins of poliovirus (VP1, VP2, VP3, and VP4) form the icosahedral shell that protects the viral RNA genome. These proteins are responsible for receptor binding (PVR/CD155), cell entry, and antigenicity. The capsid structure is critical for viral infectivity and is the primary target for neutralizing antibodies elicited by poliovirus vaccines.
