Overview

The capsid proteins of poliovirus (VP1, VP2, VP3, and VP4) form the icosahedral shell that protects the viral RNA genome. These proteins are responsible for receptor binding (PVR/CD155), cell entry, and antigenicity. The capsid structure is critical for viral infectivity and is the primary target for neutralizing antibodies elicited by poliovirus vaccines. Variations in the capsid proteins define the three serotypes of poliovirus (PV-1, PV-2, and PV-3).
