Overview

Poliovirus serotype 1 (PV-1) is one of three serotypes of poliovirus responsible for poliomyelitis. It is a non-enveloped virus with a single-stranded, positive-sense RNA genome. PV-1 enters cells via the CD155 receptor and replicates in the oropharynx/gut before potentially invading the central nervous system, leading to paralysis. While wild-type PV-1 is now endemic in only a few countries, vaccine-derived strains can still circulate. Vaccines are available using inactivated or live attenuated virus.
