Poliovirus serotype 3 capsid protein refers to the structural proteins (VP1, VP2, VP3, and VP4) that form the outer shell (capsid) of poliovirus type 3. These proteins protect the viral RNA genome, mediate host cell entry via the CD155 receptor, and are the primary targets of neutralizing antibodies. Variations in surface-exposed loops and terminal extensions on these proteins contribute to serotype-specific antigenicity and play a critical role in vaccine design. The capsid proteins assemble to form an icosahedral structure around the viral RNA, facilitating infection and replication within host cells.
Vaccines induce neutralizing antibodies that block viral entry and replication. Some antiviral compounds may target capsid proteins to disrupt assembly or stability, though this is not a common strategy for poliovirus specifically.
