Poliovirus Type 1 Capsid Protein (Sabin Strain)

Molecular classification
Structural Protein, Viral Capsid Protein
01

Overview

The poliovirus type 1 capsid protein (Sabin strain) is a structural protein component of the attenuated type 1 poliovirus used in the oral polio vaccine (OPV). The Sabin strains are live, weakened forms of wild-type polioviruses, developed to induce immunity without causing disease. The capsid proteins form the outer shell of the virus particle and are critical for its infectivity, antigenicity, and interaction with host cell receptors. It is not a therapeutic target, it is a viral protein.

02

Mechanism of action

The oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) utilizes the Sabin strain to induce an immune response against the poliovirus. The capsid protein elicits antibody production, neutralizing the virus and preventing infection.
