Overview
Poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3 are the three serotypes of poliovirus, a highly infectious human pathogen that causes poliomyelitis (polio). Each serotype is immunologically distinct and must be targeted individually for eradication efforts. Wild type PV2 was declared eradicated globally in September 2015; wild type PV3 was declared eradicated October 2019. Only wild type PV1 remains endemic today.
