Overview

Poliovirus type 2 antigen (inactivated) is a purified, formaldehyde-inactivated preparation of poliovirus type 2, typically derived from the MEF-1 strain. It is used as a component of inactivated poliovirus vaccines (IPV) for active immunization against poliomyelitis caused by poliovirus type 2. The antigen is produced by growing the virus in continuous lines of monkey kidney cells and then inactivating it with formaldehyde. Upon administration, it stimulates the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies specific to poliovirus type 2 without causing disease, leading to reduced pharyngeal excretion and transmission potential upon exposure to live virus while providing individual protection from paralytic polio disease caused by serotype 2 infection.
