Overview

The poliovirus type 3 capsid protein, when inactivated, refers to the structural proteins forming the outer shell of the type 3 poliovirus that has been rendered non-infectious—typically by formalin treatment—for use in vaccines such as the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV). The most commonly used strain for IPV is Saukett/USA/50. The capsid proteins (VP1, VP2, VP3, VP4) protect the viral RNA and elicit an immune response after vaccination. Inactivation is achieved by formalin treatment, which preserves key epitopes while preventing infectivity.
