Poliovirus type 3 immunity

01

Overview

Poliovirus type 3 immunity refers to the state in which an individual possesses protective immune responses—primarily neutralizing antibodies—targeting poliovirus type 3, one of the three major serotypes of poliovirus responsible for poliomyelitis. Immunity is typically achieved through vaccination (IPV, OPV, or experimental virus-like particle vaccines) or prior infection, resulting in antibodies that neutralize the virus by binding to conformational epitopes predominantly on the viral capsid proteins (VP1–4). These antibodies prevent the virus from attaching to and entering host cells via its receptor, CD155 (also known as the poliovirus receptor). Immunity is durable but can be incomplete or wane if not boosted. Reliable immunity is essential for controlling and eradicating poliovirus infection globally.

Mechanism of action

For vaccines: Induction of neutralizing antibodies against conformational epitopes on the poliovirus type 3 capsid (particularly capsid proteins VP1, VP2, VP3, VP4), preventing viral entry into host cells. For neutralizing antibodies: Block viral attachment or uncoating by binding to antigenic sites on the capsid.
