Poliovirus Type I Mahoney Strain Capsid Proteins (PV1 Capsid Proteins)

Target
PV1 Capsid Proteins
Molecular classification
Structural Protein, Viral Capsid Protein
01

Overview

The capsid proteins of the poliovirus type 1 Mahoney strain are structural proteins forming the outer shell of the virus. They protect the viral RNA genome, mediate host cell entry via PVR/CD155 receptor binding, and determine antigenicity. The capsid comprises 60 copies each of VP1, VP2, VP3 (surface-exposed), and VP4 (internal), all derived from the N-terminal region of a polyprotein. The Mahoney strain is a reference wild-type strain crucial for research and vaccine development (both inactivated and live attenuated). Determinants within surface loops, especially the VP1 B-C loop, are key to neurovirulence studies. No coreceptor is required for entry.
