Overview
The capsid proteins (VP1, VP2, VP3, VP4) of the Poliovirus Type II MEF1 strain form the outer protein shell, protecting the viral RNA and mediating host cell entry. They are key antigenic determinants and targets of neutralizing antibodies. The MEF1 strain is historically used in IPV vaccine production and remains a critical reference strain, but requires careful biosafety practices due to its virulence.
