Target intelligence / Profile preview
The poliovirus capsid proteins are the structural proteins that form the outer shell (capsid) of polioviruses of serotypes 1, 2, and 3. The capsid is composed of 60 copies each of VP1, VP2, VP3, and VP4. VP1, VP2, and VP3 are surface proteins involved in receptor binding and antigenicity, while VP4 is internal. These proteins are the primary targets of inactivated polio vaccines, eliciting an antibody response that neutralizes the virus.
