Overview
Poliovirus is a member of the enterovirus subgroup within the family Picornaviridae. It is a small, nonenveloped virus with a single-stranded RNA genome. There are three main serotypes: type 1 (PV-1), type 2 (PV-2), and type 3 (PV-3). It causes poliomyelitis, a paralytic disease resulting from the destruction of motor neurons in the central nervous system (CNS). Vaccines are available for prevention.
